CTA copy as curiosity: “Show me how it works”

A marketer ran paid traffic to 14 CTA variants (1k+ visitors each) and found the best CTA almost doubled CTR vs the next best — while the worst tanked conversion by 60%+. The winner: “Show me how it works.”

Why this can grow a startup

The CTA is a micro-contract. “Start now” feels like commitment. “Show me how it works” feels like curiosity — which matches the mindset of cold traffic. Curiosity CTAs reduce perceived risk because they promise information, not obligation. That keeps users moving forward long enough to see the value. Operator lens: if you’re running paid, CTA testing is cheap compared to creative and bidding churn. Test 5–10 CTAs in parallel, but keep everything else truly constant. Pair the CTA with a next page that actually “shows how it works” (a fast demo, sample results, or a short walkthrough), or you’ll burn trust.

Ian's take

From scaling consumer platforms across MENA and Southeast Asia, my default is to distrust growth work that only looks good in a slide. Paid spend is useful when it sharpens the message. I would use this as a signal test, not a way to hide weak positioning. If the first small budget does not teach us something about the audience, the campaign is too vague. I would run it small enough to learn quickly, then only scale the parts that real users repeat, save, reply to, or buy from. For this tactic, I would watch one clear growth signal before putting more time or budget behind it.

Action plan

  1. Define one narrow startup segment where cta copy as curiosity: “show me how it works” can create a measurable lift.
  2. Turn the tactic into one offer, page, campaign, or workflow for the Conversion and Ads channel.
  3. Use the evidence from reddit.com to set the first version of the message, format, and audience.
  4. Launch a small test for 7 to 14 days with one success metric: one measurable growth signal.
  5. Review the result, keep the winning message, remove weak variants, and turn the learning into a repeatable growth playbook.

Source-backed example

A marketer reported A/B testing 14 CTA variants over 30 days with paid traffic (1,000+ unique visitors per CTA). They said the top performer nearly doubled CTR vs the next best, the worst reduced conversion by 60%+, and the highest-performing CTA was “Show me how it works.”
