Growth idea action plan
Directory submissions with copy variants by directory type (pain, features, X-alternative)
Prepare 3 listing descriptions (problem-led, feature-led, comparison-led) and match them to the directory: builder/indie directories get pain framing, tech directories get feature breakdowns, and SEO-heavy directories get "X alternative" copy.
Why this can grow a startup
Most directories are weak as a standalone acquisition spike, but they can compound SEO by getting you indexed faster and by creating more surfaces that rank for comparison queries. Different directories attract different intent: founder directories skim for pain + credibility, tech directories compare features, and SEO-heavy directories often rank for "{competitor} alternative" keywords. Rotating copy also avoids duplicate-description indexing and gives you multiple angles that can show up in search. Operator lens: treat directory submission as an indexing + intent experiment — one weekend can shorten your time-to-index and tell you which positioning earns clicks.
Ian's take
From scaling consumer platforms across MENA and Southeast Asia, my default is to distrust growth work that only looks good in a slide. For SEO and AI search, I care less about clever keyword tricks and more about clarity. A buyer, crawler, or answer engine should quickly understand who this is for, why it works, what proof backs it, and what page deserves to be cited. For acquisition, I would keep the first test narrow enough that a clear yes or no is possible. Broad reach is not useful if the signal is muddy. For this tactic, I would watch one clear growth signal before putting more time or budget behind it.
Action plan
- Define one narrow startup segment where directory submissions with copy variants by directory type (pain, features, x-alternative) can create a measurable lift.
- Turn the tactic into one offer, page, campaign, or workflow for the SEO and Content channel.
- Use the evidence from reddit.com to set the first version of the message, format, and audience.
- Launch a small test for 7 to 14 days with one success metric: one measurable growth signal.
- Review the result, keep the winning message, remove weak variants, and turn the learning into a repeatable growth playbook.
Source-backed example
In a r/saasbuild thread about submitting to 80+ directories, commenters framed directory traffic as baseline rather than a spike, but noted side effects like faster indexing (one person claimed their domain got indexed in ~4 days instead of ~6 weeks). They recommended writing 3 different description angles and choosing the one that fits the directory’s top listings; one commenter also said Betalist drove "maybe 10" signup-to-paid conversions for their projects.
