Programmatic SEO: indexing triage via GSC + request indexing for the pages that matter

If Google de-indexes a large chunk of your programmatic pages, stop thinking "sitemap = indexed". Export from Google Search Console, identify the URLs that *should* be indexed (have demand, links, internal importance), and request indexing for the top tranche while you improve visible unique content on the rest.

Why this can grow a startup

At pSEO scale, indexing becomes a resource allocation problem. Google will often keep the pages that show signals (queries, clicks, links, internal prominence) and drop long-tail pages that look duplicative or low-signal. GSC gives you a practical control loop: you can see which URLs are getting impressions/clicks, isolate your high-value set, and push those through manual indexing requests (or content upgrades) first. Operator lens: if your "unique content" is hidden inside JS-heavy UI (maps, widgets), assume Google can’t evaluate it. Make sure each page has a visible HTML layer that proves uniqueness, and use internal links from traffic pages to funnel authority into the next tier.

Ian's take

From scaling consumer platforms across MENA and Southeast Asia, my default is to distrust growth work that only looks good in a slide. For SEO and AI search, I care less about clever keyword tricks and more about clarity. A buyer, crawler, or answer engine should quickly understand who this is for, why it works, what proof backs it, and what page deserves to be cited. I would run it small enough to learn quickly, then only scale the parts that real users repeat, save, reply to, or buy from. For this tactic, I would watch one clear growth signal before putting more time or budget behind it.

Action plan

  1. Define one narrow startup segment where programmatic seo: indexing triage via gsc + request indexing for the pages that matter can create a measurable lift.
  2. Turn the tactic into one offer, page, campaign, or workflow for the SEO channel.
  3. Use the evidence from reddit.com to set the first version of the message, format, and audience.
  4. Launch a small test for 7 to 14 days with one success metric: one measurable growth signal.
  5. Review the result, keep the winning message, remove weak variants, and turn the learning into a repeatable growth playbook.

Source-backed example

In r/SEO, a founder said they had ~60k location pages and Google de-indexed ~75% (from ~55k indexed down to ~15k) while traffic kept rising. A top commenter said they pull a spreadsheet from GSC, isolate the URLs that should be indexed, then use "Request indexing" on the most important ones; when they spot-check, only ~25% are indexed at any given time.
