Show HN: no-signup demo + first comment backstory to seed better discussion

For Show HN, ship a page people can try immediately (no signup, no popups, high info density) and add a first comment explaining your backstory + what’s different about your approach.

Why this can grow a startup

HN is curiosity-driven, not conversion-driven. Removing friction (signups, permission walls, popups) increases the number of people who can actually try the thing and leave high-quality feedback. The first comment works like context-setting: it frames why the project exists and what tradeoffs you made, which steers discussion toward the interesting parts rather than "what is this?" Operator lens: Show HN is a short-lived attention window — you want it to turn into durable assets: backlinks, feature requests, and a clearer positioning narrative you can reuse across markets.

Ian's take

From scaling consumer platforms across MENA and Southeast Asia, my default is to distrust growth work that only looks good in a slide. I would treat this as earning the right to be in the room, not dropping a campaign into a room. In community-led growth, the first job is to notice what people already care about, then bring a useful proof, tool, teardown, or question that makes the conversation better. For acquisition, I would keep the first test narrow enough that a clear yes or no is possible. Broad reach is not useful if the signal is muddy. For this tactic, I would watch launch conversion before putting more time or budget behind it.

Action plan

  1. Define one narrow startup segment where show hn: no-signup demo + first comment backstory to seed better discussion can create a measurable lift.
  2. Turn the tactic into one offer, page, campaign, or workflow for the Hacker News and Product channel.
  3. Use the evidence from news.ycombinator.com to set the first version of the message, format, and audience.
  4. Launch a small test for 7 to 14 days with one success metric: launch conversion.
  5. Review the result, keep the winning message, remove weak variants, and turn the learning into a repeatable growth playbook.

Source-backed example

In a long Ask HN thread about what happened after Show HN front-page exposure, HN moderator dang shared the internal tips they send to Show HN submitters. The advice emphasized: point users to something they can try, avoid requiring signups unless obviously needed, avoid popups and overly slick marketing language, and add a first comment with the backstory and what’s different about the project to seed better discussion.

Result: launch conversion
