Growth idea action plan
Trusted tester to Labs launch
Move a new AI product experience from internal prototype to trusted testers to public Labs before a full rollout.
Why this can grow a startup
Robby Stein described how Google moved AI Mode from a small internal team to roughly 500 external trusted testers, then into Labs so real query data could improve the product before broader launch. This path gives a startup honest qualitative feedback early, then enough real usage to tune the experience without overcommitting the brand to an unfinished product.
Ian's take
From scaling consumer platforms across MENA and Southeast Asia, my default is to distrust growth work that only looks good in a slide. I would treat this as earning the right to be in the room, not dropping a campaign into a room. In community-led growth, the first job is to notice what people already care about, then bring a useful proof, tool, teardown, or question that makes the conversation better. For activation, the useful question is not whether users liked the page. It is whether they got to the first meaningful win faster. For this tactic, I would watch qualified usage and feedback from tester cohort before putting more time or budget behind it.
Action plan
- Define one narrow startup segment where trusted tester to labs launch can create a measurable lift.
- Turn the tactic into one offer, page, campaign, or workflow for the Communities and Email channel.
- Use the evidence from github.com to set the first version of the message, format, and audience.
- Launch a small test for 7 to 14 days with one success metric: qualified usage and feedback from tester cohort.
- Review the result, keep the winning message, remove weak variants, and turn the learning into a repeatable growth playbook.

Google tested AI Mode with a small external trusted-tester group before opening it through Labs and using real query data to improve the product.
